Social Media Activism

The new tools of new media have re-invented social activism. Once upon a time, it was much harder to send a message across. You’d have to spread a thought or idea through word of mouth. The traditional relationship between people and political authority has forever changed. WIth twitter, Facebook, and tons of other social networking sites- it has become a lot easier for the weak to collaborate. Now, everyone is able to coordinate plans and voice their concerns. The Arab Spring is a prime of example of social media bringing power to thousands of people and being the only tool in which people could freely communicate. “Without Twitter the people of Iran would not have felt empowered and confident to stand up for freedom and democracy,” Mark Pfeifle, a former national-security adviser, later wrote, calling for Twitter to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
